The Monte Porzio Palace has ancient origins: it was built on the remains of a Roman Fortress and until 1428 had more the appearance of a fortress than of a palace. Its current appearance is due to the architect Andrea Vici, a Vanvitelli’s pupil, who was not quite alien to the project of his pupil. It already belonged to some ancient noble families (the coat of arms is still visible on the facade) as the Malatesta, Gabrielli, the Montevecchio.
It is said that Dante Alighieri and Napoleon Bonaparte (1797) have been stopping there for a short period of time.
In the building you can still admire the ancient armoury, the Italian-style garden, decorated and frescoed saloons, the beautiful inside balcony and the caves that push up till below the Garibaldi Square with shafts refined by arches and vaults carved into the tufa.
